Seven killed in Assam as goods train derails

Guwahati : At least seven people were killed and as many wounded when a goods train jumped rails in Assam Monday, officials said.

A railway spokesperson said the accident took place near Dihakhu in North Cachar Hills district, about 180 km south of Assam's main city of Guwahati.

"We are yet to get details of the mishap, but initial reports say seven people were killed and seven injured when the train's two engines and a few bogies derailed," T. Rabha, a senior Northeast Frontier Railways spokesman official, told IANS.

The train was bound for Silchar in Assam carrying rice.

"The driver is among those killed in the accident. Some of the victims were porters and railway employees," the official said.

A train carrying rescue workers and medical teams has been rushed to the accident site located in a hilly terrain.
