While the cut-off marks for popular courses like B. Com. and Economics honours are likely to go up by one to two percent, the increase in Humanities courses will be marginal as compared to last year.

Cut-offs for science courses will remain more or less the same.

S.K. Vij, dean of students' welfare, said since students started applying through the common admission form, they apply for the same course in a number of colleges leading to the cut-offs in the first list touching the ceiling.

Once the admission process starts and the students decide which college to go for, the marks in the second cut-off list will come down, though marginally.

"Hence, there is no need for disappointment after seeing the first cut-off list," S.R. Arora, principal of Hansraj College said.

The students, however, are not convinced. "The admissions in colleges like Hansraj, Hindu and Lady Shri Ram close, especially for the popular courses, after the first list itself simply because there are so many takers.

"I hope I just make it to one of the good colleges in the first go," said a nervous Swati Pandit who scored 89 percent in her class 12 exams and wants to study economics.
