Jhirgi Urain, 40, a resident of Pola, about 70 km from here, went to offer obeisance to a tribal god on June 14 at the base of a banyan tree in her village. Later she climbed up the tree and started praying there.

Urain has been fasting since then and has not come down from the tree. She is only taking water.

When people asked her to come down, she said: "Unless god asks me to do so I will remain here."

A large number of people from far-flung villages are now thronging the banyan tree to offer their prayers to the woman.

"It seems god has entered into her. She is not behaving like a normal human being. Her speech and acts are like god," said Manohar, a villager.

"There is a strong belief in our religion that god finds his way inside a good soul and starts preaching people. Our Sarna god might have entered into her. We are worshipping her to appease our god," he said.
