Kolkata : After New Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai, an American Embassy School (AES) will be opened in the city Aug 6, American Consul General Henry V. Jardine said here Friday.

Pointing out the increasing economic activities taking place in West Bengal, Jardine said the American School Kolkata (ASK) – to be operated by AES, New Delhi – would be mainly targeting the international community here.

"The school will be functioning with about 10 students and two teachers initially at the premises of US Consulate office. Later it would grow according to the response received in this part of the country," he added.

The school – starting from early elementary grades to grade XII – would provide US-based course curriculum for the children of foreign diplomats and international business families living in eastern India.

"If the demand warrants more in the days to come, we shall think for developing our own facility and will acquire our own entity in Kolkata," Jardine said, adding that ASK's presence would bring a higher profile to Kolkata for the international community.

ASK has already received clearance from the ministry of external affairs and will be an extension of AES New Delhi.
