Bihar spiritual leader charged with land grabbing

Patna : A Bihar government agency has filed a police complaint against Asharam Bapu, a Hindu spiritual leader, and his followers for illegally occupying a plot of land here.

The Bihar State Board of Religious Trusts (BSBRT) has filed a criminal case against Asharam Bapu and his followers for forcibly occupying the land of Baba Bhjikham Das Thakurbari here.

BSBRT administrator Kishore Kunal said the trust had asked the police to investigate the case and take necessary action against the accused.

"The Asharam Bapu Trust has illegally occupied 13 kathas of land," said Uday Sinha, a retired judge who was appointed the sole trustee of Baba Bhjikham Das Thakurbari by the BSBRT following a directive of the Patna High Court last month.

Sinha claimed the followers of Asharam Bapu grabbed the land in question in December 2005. He further quoted a Dec-12 judgement of the Gujarat High Court in which the court had observed that Asharam Bapu "has no respect for law".

Last year BSRBT had served a notice to the Asharam Bapu Trust's headquarters at Sabarmati in Gujarat after failing to receive any response to two earlier notices sent to its local office here.
