"Gunmen believed to be Al Qaeda militants erected faked checkpoints in the afternoon on the main road south of Samarra and abducted more than 40 people," the source from Salahudin province told Xinhua.

He said the militants were looking for people from Jubour and Shummar Iraqi tribes along with individuals working for the Iraqi security forces.

The incident came three days after the two Sunni tribes along with some Iraqi tribes in Salahudin province formed a new alliance to fight the Al Qaeda in Iraq, which they blame for indiscriminate killing in its operations against Iraqi security forces and Shia community.
