Kolkata : Maoists late Sunday attacked the house of a Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) leader in West Midnapore district of West Bengal, killing his father-in-law, police said Monday.
The incident took place at Jabada village of West Midnapore, about 200 km from here, when a group of people suddenly fired on the house of Upen Mahato, a member of the Belatikuri CPI-M committee, police said.
In the indiscriminate firing, Manik Mahato, the father in-law of Upen Mahato, was injured. Police said the Maoists also attacked the victim with sharp weapons.
The villagers took Manik to the Jhargram sub-divisional hospital. Later, he was removed to the Midnapore hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
Police combed the area immediately after the incident but no one was arrested.
A large police contingent was deployed in the area to keep vigil.
On Saturday night, a group of suspected Maoists fired on another CPI-M leader, Khaliluddin, in Birpur area of West Midnapore. But the attack was thwarted by his bodyguards and some local people.
Khaliluddin is the vice-president of Birpur panchayat samity in West Midnapore district.
