Bangladesh bids farewell to Dav Whatmore

Dhaka: Bangladesh media Wednesday paid rich tributes to cricket coach Dav Whatmore as he ends his tenure with country’s cricket team.

Giving him “much of the credit,” The Daily Star editorially noted the wins against India and South Africa during the last world Cup Cricket, and an earlier victory against Pakistan.

It praised Whatmore’s coaching of the team thanks to which “it must be said that our cricket team has stepped into the world of international cricket as an improving side”.

Writing in New Age, Shameran Abed said: “The credit for the transformation in our cricketing fortunes is due largely to the efforts of Whatmore. His exit, therefore, signals an end of an era in Bangladesh cricket and ushers in the start of a new one – one which we can only hope will be as productive and rewarding as the four years under big ‘Dav’.”

Recalling Bangladesh’s defeat by an innings in the Test against India last week, Abed said: “Even though Bangladesh humiliatingly capitulated against India over the weekend, there is no doubt that Whatmore brought about a period of renewal and resurgence in Bangladesh cricket.”
