Karnataka celebrates formation day on subdued note

Bangalore : Karnataka celebrated its 51st formation day on a low key with the state under president’s rule amid political uncertainty and an overcast sky taking the zing out of the usually colourful festivities in this capital and other places across the state.

At several places in the region known as the Hyderabad-Karnataks area — comprising Bellary, Koppal, Gulbarga, Raichur and Bidar districts in north Karnataka — celebrations were boycotted in protest against alleged lack of development there.

In the southern district of Kodagu, a call to stay away from celebrations and observe a shutdown over the government acquisition of forest and other lands in the area affected the celebrations.

In Bangalore, Governor Rameshwar Thakur inaugurated the celebrations at the Kanteerava Stadium in the heart of the city in the absence of a popular government following the collapse of the Janata Dal-Secular and Bharatiya Janata Party coalition ministry early this month.

Students from various schools in the city presented dances and other cultural programmes.
