Dhaka : The caretaker government in Bangladesh says that the emergency it declared on Jan 12 this year is within the provision of the country’s constitution and cannot be compared with emergency in Pakistan.
“There is a difference between the emergencies in Dhaka and Islamabad,” Bangladesh’s foreign advisor Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury said Sunday, according to media reports.
The reaction comes after the Bangladeshi media compared the two emergencies and stepped up demand to hold early general elections.
“Imposition of emergency in Bangladesh was within the country’s constitution, compared to that imposed in Pakistan,” Chowdhury held.
He hoped that Pakistan would be able to find an early solution to the current political problem.
“Pakistan’s stability is important for peace in the region as well as the world,” Chowdhury said.
“We’re closely monitoring the developments. It is still a fluid situation. We truly hope that it does not get unstable,” New Age newspaper quoted Chowdhury as saying.
