Despite the Left apparently softening its stance on the contentious Indo-US nuclear deal, the BJP is keen to keep up its poll preparedness.

“The core group of the party is sitting tomorrow from 10.30 a.m. to 5 p.m. to discuss preparations for the next general elections,” BJP spokesperson Prakash Javadekar said here Tuesday, adding that this could also include the choice of candidates.

BJP vice president Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi had told IANS earlier “We have started preparing panels of candidates for each Lok Sabha constituency.”

In reply to a question, Javadekar said Tuesday, “We are prepared all the time.”

He clarified that the meeting would not take up the selection of candidates for the Himachal Pradesh or the Gujarat assembly polls, which are being held next month.

Javadekar said: “The (Gujarat) state election committee has already met from Nov 1 to 5 and finalised its candidates. The central election committee may meet around Nov 20 to endorse the state election committee’s recommendations.”

The BJP said that the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) and the Congress party have “struck a deal” to get over the current impasse on the nuclear deal.

Party vice president Yashwant Sinha told newsmen that he saw a “quid pro quo” in this.

Elaborating, Javadekar said: “The agreement is simple, the Congress will back the CPI-M on Nandigram and the Marxists will back the Congress on the nuclear deal. This has fully exposed the opportunism of the CPI-M.”
