A bench of Justice S.B. Sinha and Justice H.S. Bedi asked the premier hospital to carry out various requisite medical tests on the MP and determine if he needed medical treatment for his obesity. As per his petition, Yadav at present weighs 150 kg.

The bench directed AIIMS to submit its report on Yadav’s health condition within two weeks.

The court earlier on Nov 12 had sought the response of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Yadav’s plea for treatment of his obesity outside Delhi’s Tihar Jail, where he is currently lodged for his alleged role in the murder of a Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) leader Ajit Sarkar.

The CBI in its reply told the court that it had no objection to Yadav undergoing treatment outside Tihar Jail in case the jail manual permits it.

Yadav, who earlier preferred AIIMS for his proposed treatment, later sought permission to go to a private hospital saying the institute was yet to perform such a treatment.

The RJD member was earlier shifted from Beur Jail of Patna to Tihar Jail after the apex court cancelled his bail Jan 19, 2005, taking strong exception to the “five star” treatment being provided to him there despite being an under-trial.

While staying here in Tihar Jail, Yadav’s faces trial in the murder case in a Purnea court through video-conferencing.
