19 killed in Lanka clashes

Colombo : At least 17 rebels and two soldiers were killed in intermittent clashes in north and eastern Sri Lanka as fighting escalated over the week leaving behind more than 100 dead, military officials said Monday.

Fierce clashes were reported Sunday night between the two sides in Nagarkovil, 360 km northeast of the capital, with at least 10 rebels killed and 20 injured, a military official said.

A soldier was also killed and seven were injured in the confrontation that broke out when rebels made an attempt to infiltrate through forward defence lines.

In a separate incident in Kalikulam, Mannar, 320 km north of the capital, five rebels were killed in a confrontation Sunday evening while two other rebels were killed in the same area in another incident.

Troops also came under attack in Welioya, 280 km northeast of the capital, leaving one soldier dead on Sunday.

Fighting in the northern part of the country has escalated during the week leaving behind more than 100 dead. At least 80 of them have been suspected rebels while 12 have been civilians.
