Army major killed, soldier wounded in Kashmir gunfight

Srinagar : An Indian Army major was killed and another major and a soldier critically injured in a fierce gunfight with militants near Jammu and Kashmir’s popular health resort of Gulmarg Tuesday.

Police said troops of 34 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) on specific information about the presence of a group of militants in Rangawali forest area, 50 km from here, launched a search operation Tuesday morning.

“In the initial contact with the hiding militants, one army major was killed. Another army major and a trooper were critically wounded in the gunfight which is still continuing,” a senior police official told IANS in the evening.

The injured major and the soldier were taken to hospital for treatment.

The official said, “More reinforcements have been rushed to the forest area and the militants have been surrounded. Intermittent firing exchanges are continuing.”
