A Taliban spokesman Qari Yousuf Ahmadi said from an unknown location that insurgents attacked Ajristan district Tuesday night and captured it after a brief fight with the police.

Police chief of Ghazni Ali Shah Ahmadzai confirmed the incident but said the police just temporarily vacated Ajristan and vowed to regain the disrict within days.

“A large group of rebels raided Ajristan district Tuesday night and the police retreated after suffering two fatalities”, Ahmadzai told Xinhua.

Taliban militants have control over some districts in southern Afghanistan, but districts in central Afghanistan have largely been out of their reach.
