Puducherry to provide quota for minority communities

Puducherry : Following neighbour Tamil Nadu’s footsteps, the Congress-led government of the union territory of Puducherry Thursday said it will provide reservation for Christians and Muslims in education and jobs.

Last month, the Tamil Nadu government had issued an ordinance on the subject.

A delegation of the PMK, including MP M. Ramados and PMK president G.K. Mani, presented a two-page memorandum to Chief Minister N. Rangasamy demanding a quota bill.

The chief minister told the delegation the government would make the announcement in the next few days after it got the recommendation of the State Backward Classes Commission. The quota for the Muslims and Christians would be taken from the backward classes quota as was done in Tamil Nadu.

“The recommendation is awaited… announcement on reservation will be made in the next few days,” Rangasamy promised. The quota for each group will be decided at the time, he said.

The PMK memorandum pointed out that Puducherry had a large population of minority communities. Christians and Muslims constitute 13.2 percent of the total population of the union territory.
