Media reports quoting Left sources said the Left parties would strongly oppose the government to operationalise the deal including any talks with IAEA on safeguard agreement.

The Left parties confirmed that they were conveyed by the government that it had to go on with informal consultations with the IAEA.

A statement read out by External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee at the end of the two-hour-long UPA-Left meeting said the “discussions were held in a cordial atmosphere and will continue on October nine.”

“All members of the Committee took part in the meeting. The meeting carried forward the earlier discussions on the basis of inputs provided by both sides,” the statement said.

In today’s meeting, the Government gave a reply to the Left’s rejoinder on the 123 agreement which will be taken up in the next meeting of the Committee.
