India sends aid to flood-hit Uganda

New Delhi : India will provide an emergency assistance of about $250,000 to Uganda that has been facing the flood fury in recent months.

The floods in northern and eastern parts of Uganda have reportedly killed 20 people and affected 300,000.

Devastating floods have lashed over 20 African countries over the last two months, killing over 300 people and affecting at least 1.5 million. They have been described as the worst floods in Africa in the last 30 years.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has sent a letter of condolence to Ugandan President Yoweri Kugata Museveni on the loss of life and property due to unprecedented floods in Uganda.

The prime minister also announced an emergency assistance of about $250,000 “as a token of India’s solidarity with the government and people of Uganda”, external affairs ministry spokesperson Navtej Sarna said here Monday.

“This amount can be used to provide relief supplies from India or for local procurement,” he added.
