Kaushik new head of Gujarat police

Gandhinagar : The Election Commission Thursday ordered the appointment of K.R. Kaushik as Gujarat’s new director general of police, replacing P.C. Pandey, who stands removed ahead of the December polls.

The Commission had Monday ordered the transfer of Pandey and seven other senior officials. Pandey was the Ahmedabad city police chief during the 2002 communal violence.

The Bharatiya Janata party (BJP) government had opposed the move, saying the Commission ought to give reasons for the transfers.

The poll panel however said its directions were in accordance with Article 324 of the constitution, relating to the conduct of elections to parliament and state assemblies.

Kaushik had replaced Pande as Ahmedabad police commissioner in 2002.
