Boxer clinches gold, volleyball team claims bronze for India

Hyderabad : P. Narjit Singh did India proud by winning the 54 kg category gold medal in boxing, while the men’s volleyball team defeated Qatar in straight sets to claim the bronze medal on the penultimate day of competitions in the 4th Military World Games here Saturday.

Narjit defeated Marcel Schneider of Germany 12-8 to claim the lone boxing gold, while Hari Krishan Belwal, Satya Raju, D. Bhagyarajan and Mohinder Thapa all won bronze medals after having lost their respective semi-final bouts Friday.

The men spikers smashed their way to the men’s volleyball bronze medal with an identical 25-21, 25-21, 25-21 straight sets win over Qatar.

China clinched the gold defeating South Korea 26-24, 25-21, 25-20 in the final super league game. The Koreans, having defeated both India and Qatar, had to settle for the silver medal.

With little hope of a medal in triathlon, which will be held Sunday in Mumbai, India have finished the games with two gold, one silver and seven bronze medals.

Egypt retained the men’s football title with a clinical 2-0 win over Cameroon.

North Korea claimed the women’s football gold handing Germany a 5-0 drubbing in the final.

Belarus claimed the handball gold with a 33-29 win over Baltic neighbours Latvia 33-29 while Lithuania clinched the bronze with a 37-27 win over South Korea.
