Russian wrestler booked for assault on media

Ludhiana : Police registered a case of assault Friday against Russian wrestler Nikita for his out of the ring antics during a press conference here Thursday.

Nikita got infuriated when a wrestling tournament to be organised in three cities – Jalandhar, Ludhiana and Patiala – was cancelled by the district authorities at the last moment.

He made abusive and racial comments against Indians and media persons present and then hurled a table towards them. Police had to be called in as the press conference turned into a free for all fistfight.

Police and organisers initially tried to hush up the matter by offering to apologise for the unruly behaviour of the wrestlers but the media persons kept up the pressure to get a case registered.

Finally, police succumbed and registered a case of assault against the wrestler.

Police officials said that Nikita has not been arrested. He has been asked to remain in his hotel room. The officials said that they would see the footage of the clash to press charges against him, other wrestlers involved and the organisers of the event.
