Cairo : Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul-Gheit’s visit to Lebanon Thursday has achieved its aims fully, spokesman of the ministry Husam Zaki told reporters here Friday.
The minister has tendered a report on the results of the visit to President Hosni Mubarak, according to the spokesman During the one-day visit, the minister made extensive contacts with Lebanese political and religious leaders who showed interest in Egypt’s effort help Lebanon get out of the current crisis, he noted.
Egypt believes that Lebanon should be free from all foreign influences and all Lebanese leaders should be encouraged to solve all problems by themselves, he asserted.
Shortly after arriving here earlier Thursday, he met Lebanese President Emile Lahoud and Mufti Sheikh Mohammad Rashid Qabbani in a bid to push forward Lebanon’s internal conciliation efforts and help the Lebanese reach consensus on the coming head of state.
Abul Gheit met later with Maronite Patriarch Nasrullah Safir, Speaker of the House of Deputies Nabih Berri and chairman of the Future Trend MP Saad Al-Hariri, the spokesman recalled.
The minister promised all Lebanese leaders to convey their points of view on the current political standoff to the world’s major players.
Abul-Gheit received a phone call from U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice on the Lebanese issue and will meet Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Al-Muallem next week, Zaki disclosed.
The minister will make urgent contacts with foreign ministers of France, Spain, Italy and Saudi Arabia as well as the Arab League Secretary General in order to lobby for Lebanon’s internal conciliation, the spokesman added.
