Athens : The Olympic Committee of Israel will send 10,000 trees immediately to ancient Olympia which will be planted in the broader vicinity of the Olympic installations’ forest region.
The Greek Olympic Committee Wednesday welcomed the offer by Israel to actively participate in the effort for the recreation of Olympia in the Peloponnese.
The specific site of the reforestation constitutes a separate “Olympic Forest” which will flank the Olympic site’s landscape.
The Greek Olympic Committee has already briefed the Greek government, the Agricultural Development Ministry and the Ancient Olympia Municipality in order for the project to be completed as soon as possible with the cooperation of both countries.
Nine days after wild fires destroyed forests around the birthplace of the ancient Olympic Games, Greek officials are racing to patch up the damage by March for the lighting of the flame that will travel to China for the Beijing Olympic Games.
