The sources told KUNA that the preliminary count showed five civilians dead and eight wounded in the blast, which occurred at a central market.

Medical sources expected the toll to rise.
Meanwhile, a Najaf bomb expert said the explosion was the result of an explosive device.

A booby-trapped minibus had exploded in a crowded Kufa market in May, killing 10 people and wounding 30 others.

The district is home to the Kufa Grand Mosque where Shiite cleric Muqtada Al-Sadr leads the Friday noon prayers.
