‘Nine in 10 Argentines touched by crime’

Buenos Aires, Sep 18 (IANS) Nine out of every 10 Argentines say they have been the victims of a crime and 70 percent think that the government cannot provide a quick solution to the problem of lack of security, says a poll released here.

The Index of Citizens’ Fear survey, carried out by an independent think tank, also reveals that seven out of 10 people interviewed expressed “moderate or elevated” insecurity vis-à-vis the future when they considered the current news about the country and the world, Spanish news agency EFE reported Tuesday.

Almost two-thirds of those surveyed, 59 percent, said they believed that Argentina enjoys less security than other Latin American countries, and an identical percentage felt that unemployment, which remains significant four years into a vigorous economic recovery, is related to the increase in crime.

Overall, 72 percent identified drugs as the main cause of violence.

Meanwhile, apart from physical insecurity, the respondents said they had other fears, including concern that there is a high risk that their children may not receive the education they need (40 percent) and the fear that they might be forced to leave the country due to lack of jobs at home (32 percent).

However, in the face of the possibility that Argentina could become the target of terrorist attacks, 70 percent said they felt there was no risk of that.
