Jammu : Two policemen were injured in a fierce encounter between police and the holed up guerrillas in Bhaderwah town of Doda district where Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad was supposed to visit Tuesday.
Azad had to cancel his visit to Bhaderwah, his home constituency, because the encounter site is close to the guesthouse where he was to meet the people, official sources said.
A senior police official told IANS the gunfight between police and a heavily armed group of militants began at 4 a.m. Tuesday. The guerrillas are hiding in a residential house in the main Bhaderwah town 250 km northeast of Jammu, the official said.
The militants lobbed grenades and fired indiscriminately at the police, injuring Sub Inspector Shiv Kumar and a constable who were shifted to Government Medical College hospital Jammu.
The encounter was on till Tuesday evening. “At the moment, we are engaged in gunfight with militants,” said Manohar Singh, senior superintendent of police.
