The wife and son of the deceased Ganapati Nandi were living with his maggot-infested corpse for quite a few days in the same house on Doctor’s Lane in Taltala area of central Kolkata, police officials said. Both were suffering from malnutrition as there was no food in the house.

According to local reports, the neighbours first sensed something was wrong when there was a smell of decaying flesh from the house. When they did not hear from anyone inside, police were informed. The cops broke open the door and recovered Ganapati’s body Tuesday.

The police recovered the body from the kitchen floor. They also found Ganapati’s wife and son – Bharati, 50, and Raja, 25 – huddled in a corner of the house and in slumber. The two were aware that Ganapati had died but were unable to react.

“They are not in a position to provide any lead. We are waiting for the post-mortem examination report,” a police official said.

Bharati has been mentally ill for over a decade and Raja, who is a commerce graduate, also lost his mental balance about three years ago, local reports say.

Medical experts believe acute poverty in the family and subsequent frustration led to this mental derangement.
