New York: Wearing tight socks may cause permanent damage to your kid’s skin, experts said.
Tight elastic socks cause inflammation. They could cause reddish, raised marks around the ankle or leg even after wearing them just once. Although the colour fades over time, children could possibly be left with permanent scars, the American researchers said.
“The condition of ‘sock-line-bands’ can also be caused by tight bands around the bottom of trousers,” they said.
In a letter to the British Journal of Dermatology, the researchers said several cases featured raised skin along the sock line, and most showed “hyperpigmentation” where the skin becomes darker than the surrounding area.
The dark colour may fade but leave raised lines of skin-coloured lesions, the study showed.
“There are already thousands of skin disorders treated by dermatology, and this is a prime example of how research is discovering new patterns of symptoms all the time” Colin Holden, president of the British Association of Dermatologists, said.
“While these bands are generally harmless, it is valuable for researchers to be able to discuss this possible new phenomenon in relation to already established skin disorders.” reported the online edition of Daily Mail.
