Bhavnagar foundry gets environment clearance

Ahmedabad : Ministry of environment and forests has granted environment clearance to a proposed foundry unit of Bhavnagar-based SteelCast Ltd.

A company executive said Monday the environment clearance was for a second foundry unit with a capacity of producing 650 tonnes a month. The capacity of the first unit was 600 tonnes a month. The expansion involves a capital expenditure of Rs.120 million.

The Rs.1.01 billion company manufactures carbon, low and high alloy steels and wear and abrasion resistant steel castings. Its units are located at Ruvapari Road, Bhavnagar, about 200 km from Ahmedabad.

The products manufactured by the company have applications in earthmoving, heavy electrical, mining and mineral processing equipments manufacturing sectors. Their end users also include cement plants, thermal power plants and steel plants.

The ministry has also called for a public hearing for an environmental impact assessment report on a sponge-iron project proposed by A.S.R Multimetals Pvt Ltd in Kutch.

The company has sought clearance for setting up a sponge-iron plant with a capacity of 200 tonnes per day and a pig-iron plant producing 180 tonnes a day, along with a captive power plant of 20 MW. The plant will be located at Chhadawada in Bhachau taluka in Kutch, about 350 km from Ahmedabad.
