Novel ‘Vidya Van’ scheme for plantation in educational institutions in MP

Bhopal: The Madhya Pradesh state government has launched a novel “Vidya Van” scheme for educational institutions from this year for plantation of saplings of fruit bearing, decorative and shady species in campus.

It aims at enhancing awareness of students in particular and public in general about need and
importance of greenery. The minister for forest Kunwar Vijay while giving the aforesaid information said that a total of 87,472 saplings have already been planted in 649 schools so far this year.

According to Vijay Shah in the first phase of the scheme, schools, colleges and technical institutions are being selected where sufficient land is available for plantation of minimum 100 saplings. Plantation has been carried out in minimum ten educational institutions in every general forest division in all districts. He further added that the state government has set up district level committees headed by collectors for development of “Vidya Vans” in educational institutions. The divisional forest officer is its coordinator. The members include chief executive officer of zila panchayat, district education officer, assistant commissioner, tribal
welfare and representatives of higher education department and technical education department nominated by the collector.

The minister informed that one best plantation site would be selected annually forest division wise and would be awarded on Independence Day or Republic Day. This would be done from third year of plantation. If a PTA takes up the responsibility of maintaining the “Vidya Van”, the forest department would provide funds for this purpose. ([email protected])
