Strong quake hits Indonesia

Jakarta : An earthquake with magnitude of 6.5 on the Richter scale hit western part of Indonesia on Wednesday, but there was no tsunami warning, the Meteorology and Geophysics Agency said here.

The quake struck at 22:43 Jakarta time (1543 GMT) with epicentre at 149 km of southwest Painan town of West Sumatra province and at 70 km under sea-bed, an official of the agency, Ali Imron, told Xinhua.

The quake intensity was felt at 3 to 4 MMI (modified mercally intensity), a scale which is enable to crack buildings, at Padang city, the capital of the province, 3 MMI at Pariaman town of the province and 2 to 3 MMI at Muko-Muko town of neighbouring Bengkulu province, he said.

Indonesia is laid on a vulnerable quake-hit zone called “the Pacific Ring of Fire,” where two continental plates meet that cause frequent seismic and volcanic movements
