The encounter took place in Kashmir’s Doda district late last night, news agency Press Trust of India reported Tuesday, quoting a Jammu and Kashmir police official.

HM “divisional commander” Gulam Hassan Wani alias Shamim Thool was killed in the encounter, the official added. An ak rifle, pistol, satellite phone, grenades and wireless set were recovered from the slain insurgent.

Wani had joined HM in 1992 and had been trained in Pakistan-administered Kashmir and Khost in Afghanistan, the official said. He was the oldest surviving insurgent in Jammu and Kashmir, the official added.

Indian security forces have received considerable success against HM in the last few months. 11 top HM rebels have been killed in Jammu and Kashmir since January 2008.
