Police told IANS on telephone that the mother of the newborn, Sundari, 26, was under trauma at the hospital in Erode district, 400 km southwest of Chennai. She is undergoing natal care in the hospital.

The incident was reported when a Hindu and a Muslim couple were waiting in the Tamil Nadu capital for DNA reports to identify their child – a male and a female infant.

The two mothers, Barkat Begum and Kamakshi Kasinathan, both aged 24, alleged that nurses swapped their babies at a government hospital in Royapuram, a northern suburb. The couples have agreed to abide by the results of the DNA test.
