Opposition deputy leader and former Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam alleged that deputy superintendent of police K. Easwaran was assaulted Sunday by ruling DMK party workers in Udumalaippettai in Coimbatore district, 450 km from here.

He said the police officer was beaten after declaration of results of intra-party elections.

Speaker Auvudaiyappan refused to permit raising of the issue choosing instead to uphold the submission of Finance Minister K. Anbazhagan that minor instances of violence during intra-party elections in every political party were a common occurrence.

AIADMK legislators staged walk outs on all days last week over phone-tapping scandal.

Meanwhile, AIADMK general secretary J. Jayalalitha in a statement alleged that the killing of a Maoist Navin in an encounter in Kodaikanal was a staged shootout.

“Police morale is at its lowest in the state following Chief Minister Karunanidhi’s insistence on narco-analysis of police personnel after suspending them over a mysterious theft of weapons (in Dharmapuri district’s Adhiyamankottai police station in February).

“This only goes to show the minority DMK-regime is bending backwards to nurture extreme left wing activity in the state,” Jayalalitha said.
