Mumbai : The Indian equities market ended Thursday flat with marginal gains after witnessing a bout of volatility.
With strong cues from Asian markets, the market started the day on a firm note but faltered in the latter part of the day’s trading.
The 30-share Sensitive Index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) opened at 16,796.26 points and touched a high of 16,844.02 before closing at 16,721.08 points. It went up by 23.04 points at the day’s close or 0.14 percent compared to the previous day’s ending.
The National Stock Exchange (NSE) S&P Nifty, which opened at 5,022.90 points, closed at 4,999.85 points. It went down by 22.95 points or 0.46 percent.
The BSE Midcap index, which closed at 8,741.01 points, went down by 58.05 points or 0.88 percent. The BSE Smallcap index, which closed at 8,798.08 points went down by 45.25 points or 0.67 percent.
On BSE, the market breadth was negative with low volumes. As many as 1,266 shares advanced, 1,465 declined and 54 maintained status quo.
The top gainers of the day were HUL at Rs.249.350 went up by 3.21 percent, Infosys Technologies at Rs.1,693.05 gained 2.86 percent, Satyam at Rs.439.30 surged 2.06 percent.
The top losers of the day included ACC at Rs.798.10 down by 5.49 percent, Reliance Communication at Rs.532.80 slid by 2.89 percent, Reliance Energy at Rs.1,306.45 went down by 2.73 percent.
