Colombo : Some 58 people have been arrested for election-related violence across Sri Lanka, the police said Wednesday.
They have been arrested for election violence such as attacking the rivals and their property, damaging election propaganda material, as well as general flouting of election laws, the police said.
Elections are to be held on Aug. 23 for provincial councils of North Central and Sabaragamuva provinces.
The police said 30 arrests came from the Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura districts in the North Central Province while 28 were arrested from the Kegalla district in the Sabaragamuva Province.
Analysts said the ruling United People’s Freedom Alliance have called for snap elections to test the public mood on its present military campaign against Tamil Tiger rebels in the island’s north.
