Eight killed in train collision in Indonesia

Jakarta : Eight people were killed and 32 others were seriously injured when two trains collided in Lampung province of Sumatra Island in Indonesia on Saturday morning, said Suwarno, an official of the provincial railway station.

The accident occurred at 7:30 Jakarta time near Labuan Ratu station at Kedaton town of the province when a passenger train of Sriwijaya from Palembang, the capital of South Sumatra province, struck a train carrying coal from Tarahan town of South Lampung province, said Surarno.

“Eight people were killed and 32 others were seriously wounded,” he told Xinhua from the province.

All those injured were rushed to nearby hospitals such as Imanuel and Abdul Muluk hospitals, said Suwarno.

The official said that an initial information revealed that the cause of the accident was the failure of brake system.

Train is a favorite cheaper transport mean in the country which is homed by over 230 million population.
