One Turkish soldier killed in landmine blast

Ankara : One soldier of the Turkish security forces was killed when he stepped on a landmine in southeastern Turkey, the semi-official Anatolia news agency reported on Saturday.

Private Halil Gunes died when he stepped on the landmine, planted by the outlawed Kurdish Workers’ Party (PKK), in Semdinli town of Hakkari province, according the report.

Meanwhile, the Turkish security forces killed three PKK rebels in a clash in southeastern province of Batman, a statement posted on website of the Turkish General Staff said on Friday.

In other operations, one PKK member surrendered to security forces in southeastern Sirnak province and one PKK member was captured in eastern province of Van.

The PKK, listed by the United States and Turkey as a terrorist group, took up arms in 1984 with the aim of creating an ethnic homeland in southeast Turkey. About 40,000 people have been killed in the over-two-decade conflict.
