Jammu agitators defer Wednesday’s rally

By IANS,

Jammu : The Shri Amarnath Sangarsh Samiti, a conglomerate of some 30 Hindu groups spearheading an agitation for the return of a plot of land to a shrine board, postponed its proposed rally Wednesday after a terrorist attack in Jammu.

“In the prevailing situation we will place the security of our nation first and fight against terror at higher pedestal than our rally of the day,” said Sangarsh Samiti convenor Leela Karan Sharma, after an emergency meeting of the the conglomerate.

“The rally for Wednesday stands postponed,” Sharma said.

The conglomerate leads the agitation demanding that 40 hectares of forest land in north Kashmir be allotted to the management board of the annual pilgrimage to the Amarnath cave shrine in the south of the Kashmir valley.

The land was first allotted to the board but the order was revoked after street protests in the Muslim-dominated Kashmir valley.

The revocation triggered a counter agitation in Jammu and on Wednesday the samiti had proposed a big march in Jammu, where three militants in a sustained gunfight killed an army officer and three civilian besides holding six civilians hostage.
