Dhaka, Bangladesh : As 425 candidates have withdrawn their nomination papers, the total number of contestants in 299 parliamentary constituencies for the ninth Jatiya Sangsad (JS) election has stood at 1,572, Election Commission (EC) sources said here on Friday.
The EC has already postponed polls in Noakhali-1 constituency due to the death of Nurul Islam, a candidate of the Awami League-led Mohajote.
The number of candidates is likely to fall further after allocation of election symbols as many political parties have fielded more than one candidate in several constituencies.
After allocation of election symbols, the EC will publish the final list of the candidates, the sources said.
