Bush made an unnanounced visit to Iraq Sunday, where he met with Iraqi President Jalal Talabani and Prime Minister Nuori al-Maliki.

However, his visit ended in a shameful note when an Iraqi television news reporter threw shoes at him and called him a “dog” in Arabic during a press conference with al-Maliki in Baghdad’s heavily fortified Green Zone.

The assailant was removed from the room by security staff. None of the two projectiles made contact with their apparent target.

The outgoing US president, however, made light of the incident, saying that “whoever it interests – it was a size 10 that he threw at me”.

In Arab cultures, being attacked with shoes is a sign of profound disrespect, as is being compared to a canine.

According to reports, Bush will meet Afghan President Hamid Karzai and US troops later Monday in his last visit to the war-torn country.
