Imperative to establish peace in North East: PM

NEW DELHI, Feb 1 (KUNA) — Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Friday stated it was imperative to establish lasting peace in the countrys Northeastern region, which is located strategically, being surrounded by China, Bangladesh, Bhutan, and Myanmar.
“It is imperative that permanent peace is established in Indias Northeast, ” Dr Manmohan Singh said today in his address to the Indian security forces in Northeastern state of Arunachal Pradesh, news agency Press Trust of India reported.

He said that apart from guarding Indias long borders, the security forces were fighting terrorism and insurgency in the Northeast, which were challenging. “To ensure peace, it is very important that the nation is strong, ” he said.
The Prime Minister said he would fulfill all requirements of the Indian security forces. “As the sentinels of the nation, you should get all facilities as a matter of right,” he added.

Dr Manmohan Singh praised the Indian security personnel for their role in fighting terrorism in the Northeastern region and added that people had great faith in them.

“I believe your sacrifice and selfless service has enabled the Indian government to face security related challenges and to create an atmosphere for development,” he said, adding, “I salute the soldiers who have made great sacrifices.

“Today Indian armed forces occupy an important place in the world,” the PM said adding their sense of dedication and sacrifice has helped the country in difficult period.

Indias Northeastern region is home to several insurgent groups. Over the last couple of years, peace has returned to large parts of the region owing to governments ceasefire pacts and accords with nine insurgent groups. Many of the rebel groups operate from neighbouring Myanmar and Bangladesh and New Delhi has urged both governments to demolish the terror infrastructure on their soil. India has also blamed Pakistans Inter Services Intelligence of trying to destablise the Northeast by providing assistance to the rebel groups.
