Al-Maliki meets US, UN officials on Iraqi refugees issue

Baghdad : Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Al-Maliki received here Thursday visiting U.S. Undersecretary for Democracy and Global Affairs Dr. Paula J. Dobriansk and United Nations Goodwill Ambassador and Hollywood megastar Angelina Jolie.

The meeting dealt with humanitarian issues relating to Iraqi refugees and the internally displaced people inside Iraq.

Al-Maliki reaffirmed during the meeting the commitment of his government to prepare the necessary security atmospheres for the safe return of all refugees and displaced people to their homes, according to a statement issued by his office.

The two sides reviewed the international assistances to the refugees and the displaced as well as ways to relieve their suffering, said the statement of which KUNA received a copy.

Al-Maliki expressed hope for early return of all them to their homes in order to resume contribution to the development and reconstruction of Iraq.

He cited the recent measures including the law-enforcement plan to improve the security situation and enhance the national reconciliation in the war-turn country.

All the measures aim to prepare the ground for the return of the refugees and displaced Iraqis to their homes, the statement pointed out.

For their part, Dobriansk and Jolie appreciated the efforts of the Iraqi government that encouraged Iraqi refugees to start returning to Iraq.

They renewed the support of the United States and the United Nations to help the Iraqi concerned agencies help Iraq’s neighbors provide the necessary assistances to the Iraqi refugees and help stabilize Iraq.

Dobriansk and Jolie who arrived here earlier Thursday for an official visit to Iraq, met with Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zibari and Minister of Immigration Affairs Abdul-Samad Sultan.

They also discussed humanitarian issues relating to the displaced people inside Iraq with Commander of the U.S.-led Multi-National Forces in Iraq David Petraeus and special envoy of U.N. Secretary General to Iraq Stefan de Mistura.
