Kolkata: Opposition to the policies of the ruling Communist Party of India (Marxist) is gaining momentum in the backwaters of West Bengal. Bhagwatipur in Hooghly District is a Muslim-dominated area. A meeting was organized there to discuss reservations for Muslims in government services, restoration of Wakf properties and cancellation of author Taslima Nasreen’s visa. Most of the speakers condemned the policies of ruling CPM. They held the government responsible for discontinuation of lessons in Qur’an at Far Farah Madrasa.
Maulana Talha Siddiqui said although Bhagwatipur is a Muslim dominated area, neither Muslim teachers are appointed here nor local Muslims are absorbed in government job. Advocate Idrees Ali alleged that a section of CPM has usurped Wakf properties. He demanded reservation for Muslims in government services. The speakers were also vocal on the extension of visa to Taslima Nasreen.
