Baghdad : Unknown gunmen on Wednesday shot dead five construction workers and wounded two others in the volatile province of Diyala in northeast of the capital, a provincial police source said.
“Gunmen opened fire on a group of construction workers who were waiting in the morning to be hired for a day-long job in the town of al-Saadiyah, some 120 km northeast of Baghdad,” the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.
Diyala province, which stretches from eastern edges of Baghdad to the Iranian border, has been the stronghold of al-Qaida militant groups and other insurgents since the U.S.-led invasion broke out in 2003.
