MADRID, February 15 (RIA Novosti) – The world’s largest passenger sailing ship, able to hold some 230 people, will be constructed in Spain by April 2009, the Pais newspaper said on Friday.
The three-mast passenger ship, the Sea Cloud Hussar, is currently being built near Vigo, Spain. It will be over 135 meters long (440 feet) and will have a beam over 17 meters (55 feet) wide and a total sail area of 4,000 square meters (13,120 feet).
The ship is intended for cruise trips in the Mediterranean Sea.
“The market’s response to our particular kind of nostalgic but modern cruises has been overwhelming,” said Konstantin Bissias, managing director of Sea Cloud Cruises.
The construction of the mammoth sailing ship will cost the company a total of 69 million euros ($100 million).
