Islamabad : Latest incomplete results of Pakistan’s elections on Tuesday show that Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) takes the lead by winning 77 out of the 228 National Assembly seats, which have gone to candidates.
So far 228 out of 269 NA seats have been announced, local TV channel Geo reported, adding that Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) was the runner-up with 62 seats and former ruling party Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid gained 34 seats.
Due to the demise of some contesting candidates, polling on some NA seats have been postponed. Local media reported that more than 40 parties will vie for 269 out of the 272 NA seats in the general elections.
President Pervez Musharraf said Monday that whichever party won the elections should form the government. In case there is not a hung parliament, a coalition government should be formed, said Musharraf.
If the initial results provided by Geo can be confirmed by the Election Commission of Pakistan, according to which more than 100 NA seats are still awaited to be announced, no party will win majority votes in the elections and Pakistan will have a coalition government according to Musharraf’s statement.
Currently the polling staff are still counting votes and the final unofficial results are expected to be available later.
Musharraf has said he would be willing to work with any Prime Minister and the party forming the next government.
