New Delhi: Taking a firm stance, the Delhi High Court on 19th February ordered private schools to provide free education to poor students. The court said no comprise would be made on the issue.
The court also asked the Delhi government to inform the court about what actions were taken on complaints from parents that private schools were declining to provide free education as per previous orders. The court has given two weeks’ time to Delhi Education Directorate to explain its position. Next hearing on this issue has been scheduled for 11th March 2008. More than 500 parents had complained to the government that previous orders were not complied by the schools.
Expressing its anger, the court said the schools, which obtained lands from the government at cheap rates, would have to provide free education to poor students. According to previous orders, stringent action could be taken against schools not providing free education to 15% poor children, including the children of their own employees. Even the recognition of guilty schools could be cancelled.
