New Delhi: One third of India’s population is illiterate as only 13% of children in the school-going age group are able to pass high school, said Vice President Hamid Ansari in New Delhi on 19th February.

Speaking at the convocation of Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), he said only 10% of high school pass-outs pursue higher education and only 5% of them are able to obtain a degree. The country and the society will have to take some immediate action to deal with the situation.

The main program was held in New Delhi while about one lac graduating students watched the program at their regional centres and study centres across the country. They were awarded degrees on the occasion.
