Dr. Al Abadi new secretary of Islamic Fiqh Academy

Jeddah –(IINA)February 26– The Secretary General of the Organization Islamic Conference (OIC) Prof. Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu has appointed Dr. Abdul Salam Daud Al Abadi, as secretary of the Jeddah-based International Islamic Fiqh Academy, an affiliate of OIC. He has been the vice president of the Academy since 2006. The OIC General Secretariat congratulated Dr. Al Abadi on his new appointment and wished him every success in his new mission to advance this pioneering Islamic jurisprudential institution towards greater heights amidst the daunting challenges facing the Islamic world, according to an OIC statement.

“The OIC General Secretariat is confident that Dr. Al Abadi’s specialized qualifications and wide experience makes him the right and most competent choice to properly the steer the affairs and reform process of the Academy. The General Secretariat hopes that under the direction of the new leadership, the Academy will make progress in discharging the noble mission of spreading moderation so as to become a leading jurisprudential authority in the entire Islamic world,” the statement said. Dr. Al Abadi earned his doctorate and masters’ degrees in Comparative Jurisprudence from the Faculty of Shariah and Law at Al Azhar University, Cairo, in 1972 and 1967 respectively. He also obtained a bachelors’ degree in Islamic Shariah from the University of Damascus in 1963.

Dr. Al Abadi has occupied many high ranking positions, including the Head of the Department of Jurisprudence and Law at the Faculty of Shariah, Jordanian University. He was also served in various other capacities such as Dean of Students Affairs, Rector of Al Bayt University, Secretary General of the Jordanian Ministry of Endowments and later Minister of Endowments. Dr. Al Abadi also held important administrative positions, including member of the Jordanian Fatwa Council since 1986 and member of the International Islamic Fiqh Academy representing Jordan between 1980 and 1986. He has also participated in many scholarly and academic conferences and symposia in the areas of contemporary Islamic thought, Da’awa, education, Islamic economics, dialogue among schools of thought and Muslim-Christian dialogue.
